2. International Workshop on the History and Culture of Bukovina, 20–22 November 2024, Bukovina Institute, University of Augsburg, Germany

2. International Workshop on the History and Culture of Bukovina

20–22 November 2024, Bukovina Institute, University of Augsburg, Germany

The Bukovina Institute in Augsburg invites early career scholars from the humanities and social sciences to participate in a vibrant intellectual exchange on the history and culture of Bukovina. We welcome contributions from the fields of anthropology, art history, cultural studies, digital humanities, ethnography, environmental history, geography, history, Jewish studies, legal history, literature, social and economic history, sociology, translation studies, and related fields.

The workshop aims to create a platform where early career scholars (BA, MA, PhD, post-doc) can present their work to their peers and established scholars in the field. By tackling questions related to the history and culture of Bukovina, we aim to undertake a multidisciplinary revision of the knowledge about this region and to create a platform for scholarly exchange.

The keynote address will be given by the distinguished Bukovina expert Professor Kurt Scharr (University of Innsbruck, Institute of History and European Ethnology). Senior experts in the fields outlined below will be invited to attend.

While all Bukovina-related papers are welcome, we particularly invite submissions on the following topics:

  • the perspective of Jews and other minorities on Bukovina and their memory cultures
  • environmental history, mental mapping, and landscape dynamics
  • mobility, multiethnicity, and family entanglements
  • literary and artistic perspectives
  • medical history, especially the history of psychiatry
  • state-building and everyday life in the urban centers in theory and practice
  • experimental research approaches (gamification, storytelling, oral history, digital archives, etc.)
